WASHINGTON Less than a month after his previous covert visit at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center caused controversy, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was sent to the hospital on Sunday due to indications of a “emergent” bladder ailment. At 2:20 p.m. on Sunday, Austin, 70, was returned to Walter Reed by his security detail, as stated by Air Force Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, the Pentagon press secretary. He gave deputy defense secretary Kathleen Hicks his authority shortly before five o’clock in the evening.
